Why build a directory of museum exhibitions?

I studied art history, and museums have been the fixed point of every trip I’ve taken since.

I had a free morning in New York and three good options: uptown to the Frick, downtown to the Whitney, or back to MoMA, an old favorite. I picked MoMA on a whim, expecting a familiar visit. Instead I walked into two special exhibitions I hadn’t known were on — Ruth Asawa: A Retrospective and Wifredo Lam: When I Don’t Sleep, I Dream.

What stayed with me was the other side of it. If I’d gone uptown or downtown that morning, I’d never have known what I missed.

The Asawa show had already been to San Francisco, and has since moved on to Bilbao and Basel. Good exhibitions travel, and almost nobody tracks where they go — so we do.

Every exhibition we list carries confirmed dates and a link to the museum’s own page, because the best show of your trip shouldn’t be the one you hear about after you’ve flown home.
