Marking the nation's 250th anniversary, three collections of American art (the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Middleton Family Collection) come together across two venues: the museum's renovated American Art galleries and the Academy's newly refurbished Frank Furness building. Spanning three centuries, the exhibition sets the museum's holdings beside furniture, decorative arts, painting and sculpture from the Middleton Family Collection, much of it rarely seen. Charles Willson Peale's life-size portrait of George Washington anchors the colonial and early national galleries, with landscapes and portraits running from nineteenth-century realism and Impressionism through the expressionist movements of the twentieth century.
