Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea

Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea is on view at The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., United States, until January 24, 2027.

Last verified October 25, 2026 · Official source ↗

The first exhibition to bring together the work Milton Avery, Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko made during the summers they spent together on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, in the 1930s and 1940s, and later in Provincetown. Avery's rich color and simplified forms shaped the two younger painters he mentored; by the 1950s the influence ran both ways, as all three moved toward large scale, abstraction and expressive color. Shown alongside the Phillips's own long support of the three artists, including the Rothko Room. Organized by the Cape Ann Museum with The Phillips Collection; guest curator Eliza Rathbone, coordinated at the Phillips by Renée Maurer.
