To mark the bicentennial of Frederic Church's birth, the Detroit Institute of Arts displays his 1862 painting of an erupting volcano alongside three of his preparatory oil studies and a landscape by Louis Remy Mignot. The exhibition explores how the artist's journeys to Ecuador and Colombia, combined with his interest in geology, inspired his dramatic depictions of active natural forces.
