Manga Before Manga: Japanese Art from the Collection

This Brooklyn Museum installation explores centuries of Japanese visual storytelling to highlight the origins of modern manga. Drawing from the permanent collection, the selection of twenty-one works includes woodblock prints, illustrated books, ceramics, and a fifteenth-century handscroll. The display illustrates how historic narrative techniques and themes continue to influence contemporary graphic novels.
