A free exhibition drawn entirely from the CMA's collection of early engravings, one of the finest anywhere. Following the medium from goldsmiths' workshops on the Rhine to Florence, Nuremberg, Venice, Antwerp, Rome and Paris between about 1470 and 1650, it shows how printmakers working only with a burin and a copperplate solved problems of tone, texture and volume in line. Highlights include the only known first state of Antonio del Pollaiuolo's Battle of the Nudes and unique impressions by the Master of the Nuremberg Passion and the Master of the E-Series Tarocchi, alongside Schongauer, Dürer, Marcantonio Raimondi and Goltzius.
