The Substitute

Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg's digital video and sound installation uses artificial intelligence and visual effects to digitally revive the extinct male northern white rhinoceros. Confined within a virtual room, the pixelated creature gradually develops into a lifelike form while learning to move. On view at Cooper Hewitt, the work asks whether humanity should resurrect lost species when it failed to protect them from dying out.
